I.M. Pei is one of the world’s most famous architects. Today is his birthday. He’s 99 years old. Chinese-born Ieoh Ming Pei emigrated to the United States and took New York by storm as a young man. He is most well-known for the Pyramid at the Louvre in Paris and the National Gallery of Art. But my favorite Pei design is Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yes, that was his baby.
The Hall of Fame towers over Lake Erie. I love its geometrical structures and amazing cantilevered spaces. Pei himself said it was his aim to “echo the energy of rock and roll”. And boy did he ever. In his late 70s by the time he accepted the project he showed that age had very little to do with his vision.
