My clients’ entrance did not fit well with the original ranch style look and feel of their house.  The original owners created a very long corridor for the entrance. The columns were also very tall and out of proportion to the rest of the house.  They looked like a line up of soldiers – not a very welcoming way to enter your home!

The original house had an open truss system for the arbor.  We took all of it down and designed a pergola entrance with a very simple post and beam system with concealed fasteners.  This mimicked what we did on the back deck pergola as well.  All of the new structures were made of redwood.

A pergola is a garden feature forming a shaded walkway or passageway of vertical posts or pillars that usually support cross-beams and a sturdy open lattice.  It may also be an extension of a building, serve as protection for an open terrace, or link to another space. The origin of the word pergola refers to a projecting eave.
