Now we go to the back of the Portola Valley home where we remodeled the deck, pergola and stairs. The owners like to eat out on the deck and spend time there, but didn’t do it often because of two issues —too much sun and too many different deck levels.

One part of the deck extended out from the sliding bedroom door and was not really utilized because of the narrow width. The rest of the deck was L-shaped, with a post in the middle, that cut up the space even more. Their eating area was relegated to the back corner, and felt bunched up.

The back deck we designed gave the owners a whole new large, connected space for entertaining and enjoying their back yard. The horizontal design of the railing was built in a style that allowed for a more open space and enjoyment of the view. All of the pergola was built to match the same redwood that was used for the front entrance. The deck surface and railing tops are IPE. And finally we added an adjustable sunshade to help keep out the sun or let it in!
